Community Involvement PDF

[en français]

The ideal of service to others was instilled in me when I joined Girl Guides at the age of ten.  I have always cared about my community and try to help others as much as possible, whether at work or in my personal time. I often tell people that “my children are my charities.”

ImageI devote numerous hours per week to involvement in community activities, and have done so even while attending university and in every community where I have lived. My longest community relationship, next to CBA, is with Girl Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada.  I will be celebrating 40 years with that organization in 2009.  My guiding experiences include travel as a youth member to an interprovincial cultural camp in Prince Edward Island and, as an adult, three international camping events in Cape Breton, Denmark and Ontario.  I was also fortunate to attend one of the World Conferences as a representative of International Planned Parenthood Federation.

I have belonged to my choir (and Harmony, Incorporated) for 23 years and spent many years on the Board of Directors, serving in many positions, including Chapter President.  I have been acting musical director and assistant director and currently am the bass section leader.  I also served for nine years on the International Board of Directors of Harmony, Incorporated, two of those years as International President.  I was honoured to represent that organization at four international conventions of Sweet Adelines International and twice at the World Harmony Council meetings held during the Barbershop Harmony Society’s annual convention.  In 2008, I became a director with Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund, a registered charity which provides grants and scholarships to youth and adults interested in continuing their education in vocal music.

I am a charter member of the Rotary Club of New Minas Sunrise and a charter member of the Paul Harris Society of District 7820.  I have served on our Board of Directors for five terms.  Currently, I am Director of Vocational Service, but have also been Director of Community Service, Vice-President and Secretary.  I have also completed the Rotary Leadership Institute program and served as a host mother to a Rotary youth exchange student from Australia.
